Manual Osteopathy is a system of assessment and manual therapy to treat pain and dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system. Melissa incorporates her massage therapy background in addition to manual osteopathic techniques. Nathan incorporates his kinesiology background to address range of motion and proper functioning.
Is Manual Osteopathy right for me?
It is suitable most people experiencing physical pain. If a condition is acute or requires medical attention, you are encouraged to seek that first. Most people come with specific pain or conditions. If you have ongoing muscle tension and pain in an area, manual osteopathy can help get to the root of the problem. Many people seek relief after they’ve tried everything else.
How does it work?
Your nervous system regulates movement patterns and muscle tone in your body. When there has been trauma or repetitive use strains, muscles and nerves are affected resulting in the sensation of pain in the body. Manual osteopathy addresses the root of the problem to achieve healthy movement patterns and muscle tone, so that pain is relieved and movement is restored.
What can I except in a manual osteopathy session?
Each session is custom tailored to your needs and treatments can be applied through clothing (Nathan’s style), or directly on the skin (Melissa incorporates more of this). A thorough intake and initial assessment is performed, followed by re-assessment at subsequent sessions. Treatment involves an educational component, discussion and hands on techniques. Techniques are gentle and comfortable, usually staying well within your pain tolerance levels.
In most cases, conditions will begin to respond within one or two sessions. In order to continue on with treatment, you should see continued improvement. If no improvement is made by the 3rd session, it’s time to consider the options.
An initial series of sessions can last a few weeks to a few months depending on the severity and duration of the problem. Once a week is a reasonable frequency. Some opt for twice a week, others every two or three weeks. There is no ongoing requirement for treatment. Once your initial concern is addressed, you are encouraged to come on an as needed basis.
Is manual osteopathy covered under health insurance?
Manual Osteopathy is covered by most extended health plans. In many cases, it does not require a physician referral the way massage therapy does. You are encouraged to check directly with your company to ensure Melissa Seguin, or Nathan Davis is an approved provider for manual osteopathic services. All services are paid by you at the time of session. You then submit your receipt directly to your company for reimbursement.
Many people who do not have insurance, appreciate the benefits of manual osteopathy and pay out of pocket. We can help you determine a frequency of visits to works within your health needs and budget.
