When to Avoid Massage – Contraindications.
Massage is a great option for most people to help relax tense muscles and relieve pain. It’s not the best choice in all situations.
Massage is not a substitute for proper medical care. We work along side other health care practitioners and refer if needed.
Here are a few conditions that means massage is not appropriate for you at this time:
-Accute injury or conditions that just occurred and require medical care
-Blood clots
-Some advanced diseases such as heart or kidney failure
-Dangerously high and unstable blood pressure that is not controlled
-Fever
-Contagious or infection conditions
List is compiled from “Mosby’s Massage Therapy Review” by Sandi Fritz.
At times, a therapist will avoid certain areas due to conditions or injuries (local contraindications), but still be able to perform treatment.
If you have any serious medical conditions, we recommend discussing the option of massage with your physician. Also, feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions.
